The second report on fiscal federalism in Spain analyses the worrying situation of city council funding<\/b> <\/p>\n

On Wednesday 8 June at 7 pm, the Barcelona Economic Institute (IEB) will present the IEB Report on Fiscal Federalism in Spain ’10<\/em>, an analysis of the delicate situation of local government funding in this country. Coordinated by the IEB researchers Núria Bosch and Albert Solé the study includes analyses by a range of experts from all over Spain. Among their conclusions, the contributors warn that city councils will have to increase tax pressure; they  <\/span> <\/span>quantify the extra cost that capital status involves for cities such as Barcelona and Madrid, and note that town and city councils in Catalonia spend three out of every ten euros on non-obligatory services.<\/p>\n

<\/span>At the same event, the IEB will also present its World Report on Fiscal Federalism’10<\/em>, an analysis of local funding from an international perspective. Both reports will be presented by the coordinator and director of the UB’s Chair in Fiscal Federalism, Núria Bosch<\/strong>, and by one of the leading authors, Javier Suárez-Pandiello, <\/strong>professor in the Public Treasury at the University of Oviedo. The event will be presided over by the Vice-President of the Catalan government and Minister for Governance and Institutional Relations Joana Ortega<\/strong>, and the Secretary-General of the Presidency, Francesc Homs, <\/strong>will also be among the speakers. <\/p>\n

<\/span>The IEB report on Fiscal Federalism is published annually and includes contributions from experts in the field from the IEB and other universities, research centres and government offices. In the Spanish report, the main theme is the new model of financing for the autonomous communities.<\/p>\n
