The 2024 annual report: the IEB grows stronger each year

The Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB) has just published its annual report, which describes the institution’s activities during the 2024 calendar year. As reflected in the document, 2024 has been another productive year for the IEB as it seeks to achieve its main objectives, i.e., promoting and disseminating research in applied economics, and contributing to the debates on economic policy and decision-making.

The figures presented in the report bear witness to the IEB’s strength. A total of 44 articles submitted by IEB researchers to journals included in the Journal Citation Reports were accepted for publication: 31 already published in 2024 and 13 in upcoming issues. In addition, IEB researchers published nine articles in other academic journals, as well as 13 book chapters with renowned publishers. They also published 17 working papers.

In 2024, the IEB organized eight workshops and symposia: the Meeting on Transport Economics and Infrastructure, the Workshop on the Effects of Short-Term Rentals on Residential Markets, the International Academic Symposium on Energy Sustainability, Fiscal Forum 3.1 on the Tax System and Business Competitiveness, the Workshop on Decentralization and Health Systems, the Workshop on Urban Economics, the Workshop on Public Policies, and the Workshop on Violence against Women. In addition, five more events focused on public policy debate were organized: the Circular Economy and the Financial System, Analysis of the Internalities of Energy and Climate Policies, Challenges and Opportunities in Water Management, Infrastructure Policies and Sustainable Development, and Persistence of Energy Poverty.

The report also includes updates regarding IEB staff. In 2024, two new researchers joined the institute in addition to three others participating in the ERC Advanced Grant WomenEmpower led by researcher Núria Rodríguez-Planas. Five new research associates and eight new doctoral students were also recruited.

Another significant statistic recorded during 2024 was the total number of competitive research projects developed by IEB researchers, which now stands at 29, including the ERC Advanced Grant for the period 2024-2029 mentioned above.
