More than 70 people attended the VII Workshop on Transport Economics, held on 24 February last and organised by the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB) and Fedea. The workshop brought together experts on mobility to discuss competencies, regulations and investment in Spain’s infrastructure and transport policy.

The most recent economic crisis had a strong generational component. This is one of the conclusions drawn in the latest edition of the IEB Report – published by the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB) under the title “Inequality: measurement and policies” – which focuses on analysing inequality. In his contribution, José Fernández-Albertos, a researcher with the Institute of Public Goods and Policies and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), shows that in the 2007-2013 period, poverty was “rejuvenated”: “Among those aged 16-29 [the poverty rate] increased from 18.1 to 28.6%.” In contrast, “the poverty rate among those aged over 65 fell from 25.5 to 11.4%.”

The recent reorganisation of the governing bodies of the University of Barcelona (UB) has seen the appointment of two members of the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB). Researcher Oriol Escardíbul has been named Vice-Rector for Finance, a position that depends directly on the Rector, Dr Joan Elias i García, while researcher Maite Vilalta has been appointed Rector’s Delegate for Social Action.

On February 7 last, the Chair of Sustainable Energy at the University of Barcelona brought together prominent names from the international academic community to discuss the challenges facing the future of the energy sector.
