Investment in prevention of pollution, a favorable regulatory framework and public subsidies are some of the main factors that stimulate business investment in environmental R & D. This is one of the main conclusions of the paper ‘What are the determinants of investment in environmental R & D?’, Published by the researchers of the IEB María Teresa Costa-Campi, José García-Quevedo and the professor of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Esther Martínez-Ros, and that is the topic of the last issue of the IEB INFO.
According to the document, while “business strategies, technology, market demand and regulation” are driving factors for eco-innovation, technology and markets do not seem to be sufficient grounds for companies to develop environmental innovations.
The IEB INFO also highlights the position of Spain in European eco-innovation. According to the data of the European Commission, the country moves in parameters similar to those of the average of the continent. A remarkable fact if we think that general innovation data is well below the rest of the countries in the territory.
