“Intimate Partner Violence: Drivers and Policies” is the title of the IEB Report 1/2026, coordinated by Núria Rodríguez-Planas, professor at the University of Barcelona and researcher at the Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB).
The report brings together three complementary contributions—from Dan Anderberg (Royal Holloway, London), Jennifer Roff (CUNY, New York), and Jeffrey Grogger (University of Chicago)—that share a dual goal: to go beyond mere correlations, and to identify the factors that cause intimate partner violence and the mechanisms that are effective in preventing it.
According to Rodríguez-Planas, “correlation cannot distinguish whether a given factor drives violence, reflects it, or simply occurs simultaneously with it.” For this researcher, who leads the ERC Advanced Grant WomEmpower project, “the goal is to generate causal evidence on the factors that lead to victimization and perpetration of gender-based violence in advanced economies, building bridges between research and policy by reaching commitments with institutions such as the OECD, UN Women, the World Bank and the International Labour Organization.”
